Today’s face: Anna, inspired by Sktchy. I say inspired, but this portrait both is and isn’t Anna. I had the strangest and most amazing experience drawing it. When I do portraits I usually spend more time looking at the photos than at my page but about halfway through drawing this portrait I stopped looking at Anna’s photo because it set me off thinking about Haruki Murakami’s books. He’s my favourite author and his books always feature strong female characters and in my mind the portrait became one of his characters and that was who I was drawing. And then somehow – for the first time ever – I was drawing from my imagination. I’ve never done that before and I’ve never understood how artists can do it, but now I think I begin to understand.

Drawn in a Hannehmühle Nostalgie sketchbook with a Copic Multiliner Cool Gray 0.3 pen and Copic markers .
