I’ve been really struggling to maintain any kind of consistency in my drawing these past few months. I’ve had some good days, but I’ve had some truly terrible ones too. This portrait is an example of a bad day – everything about it is wrong. The features are all “not quite right”, the head is an odd shape and the hair is just lazily drawn. Some of this is because of time pressures- the need to fit drawing in between work and family time. So I’ve decided that, after almost three years of drawing daily portraits, I’m going to stop. I’ll continue to draw portraits, just not daily, probably only on the days I’m not working, when I gave more time. I’m hoping that by taking the pressure off myself, I’ll be able to focus more and find some form again.

Kristine

Today’s face: Kristine, inspired by Sktchy. Kristine’s inspiration photo for this portrait is also today’s inspiration photo for Sktchy’s Mindful March lesson, which focuses on the concept of Maitri, which is about being kind, to others but also to ourselves. We were asked to take note of something we like in our portraits and share it. I don’t often include backgrounds in my portraits but I liked a quilt in the inspiration photo so much that it prompted me to create a background that I really love. And I’ve used that blue in various ways throughout the portrait and it brings the whole piece together – so these are the things that I especially like about this portrait.

Sara

Today’s face: Sara, inspired by Sktchy. My Sketchbook Skool and Sktchy friend Aleesha and I decided to revive the old Sktchy WAX (Weekend Art Extravaganza) art challenges and set up a closed FB group, Old School Sktchy, earlier this week for sharing them. I’m delighted to say we already have around 100 members and we’re having our first challenge this weekend. The theme is winter and this is my challenge portrait. The hashtag for sharing the portraits on social media is #OSSWAXwinter if you want to look out for them.
