My Sktchy friend Lois lost her daughter last week. I really didn’t know what to say in response to that – what can anyone say? But I knew what I could do. I could draw Elizabeth. So that’s what I’ve done. I haven’t quite captured her, I lost her likeness somewhere along the way. There’s a little of her there but not enough, everything is not quite right – I think maybe I was trying too hard to get it right. But my thoughts were with Lois for every second that I spent drawing this. I don’t think I’ve ever drawn a more heartfelt portrait.

Carlo

Today’s face: Carlo, inspired by Sktchy. April is Earth Month on Sktchy and this portrait is a celebration of that – I love how happy Carlo looks to be lying amongst the leaves and flowers!

I’ve been really struggling to maintain any kind of consistency in my drawing these past few months. I’ve had some good days, but I’ve had some truly terrible ones too. This portrait is an example of a bad day – everything about it is wrong. The features are all “not quite right”, the head is an odd shape and the hair is just lazily drawn. Some of this is because of time pressures- the need to fit drawing in between work and family time. So I’ve decided that, after almost three years of drawing daily portraits, I’m going to stop. I’ll continue to draw portraits, just not daily, probably only on the days I’m not working, when I gave more time. I’m hoping that by taking the pressure off myself, I’ll be able to focus more and find some form again.
