Megan

Today’s face: Megan Rapinoe. I finished my sketchbook for The Sketchbook Project 2020 and found myself wanting to make another small themed sketchbook. So I’ve decided to fill a small accordion sketchbook I was given by a friend last year with portraits of my some of my contemporary female heroes. I’m going to do all the portraits with coloured pencils because I need the practice. So my first portrait is of Megan Rapinoe, star of the US women’s World Cup football team and a hero of mine for standing up to Donald Trump (as well as all kinds of prejudice in life and sport).

Drawn in a Hema accordion book with a grey Copic liner and coloured pencils.

Kristine

Today’s face: Kristine, inspired by Sktchy. Kristine’s inspiration photo for this portrait is also today’s inspiration photo for Sktchy’s Mindful March lesson, which focuses on the concept of Maitri, which is about being kind, to others but also to ourselves. We were asked to take note of something we like in our portraits and share it. I don’t often include backgrounds in my portraits but I liked a quilt in the inspiration photo so much that it prompted me to create a background that I really love. And I’ve used that blue in various ways throughout the portrait and it brings the whole piece together – so these are the things that I especially like about this portrait.

Isabella was the first Sktchy muse I ever draw with Copic markers back in April 2016 so it was fun to go back and redraw her again today. Here is the drawing I did back in 2016 alongside today’s portrait. While today’s portrait isn’t the best I’ve ever draw I’m please to say that my skills have improved considerably over the past 2+ years.
